Notes - John’s will was made in 1565 and probate was granted in 1567. He had a tenement and land in Belchamp Walter, which he left to his wife Joan until his eldest son, John, was old enough to take over. His children would have been very young when he died and he asks her
‘to see my children nurtored & bringst up in the faith & love of god, and kepte with sufficient meate drinke & clothing untill they come to such age & abilitie as they may gett their owne lyving’
His other children - Robert, Joan and Audrey - were to get 5 marks each. He also asked that Joan give his sister Alice a room in the house. As an afterthought, he also left 6 pecks of malt to 6 poor households in Belchamp and some money to a friend.
His will was proved 2 years after his death. I’m not sure why there was a delay. I think that Joan remarried in 1567 and I suspect that property rights had to be clarified. [1]
