  • Notes
    • When he was 14, William was arrested and tried in 1839 for stealing a cheese, value 6d, the goods of Charles Knight and another. In his defence, he asserted that a man in a ‘smock-frock’ had promised him 5d if he carried the cheese to Whitechapel. William received a ‘good character’ and one of the witnesses promised to employ him. He was recommended to mercy and confined for seven days.

William ended up in Australia and became a sailor. On 10 Feb 1853, he was drowned at Port Jackson (now Sydney Harbour) when a plank on which he was standing gave way, while he was scraping the hull of the barque Proteus. One of his shipmates dived in after him but couldn’t find the body. His body was eventually recovered and a Coroners Inquest was held, which returned a verdict of accidental death. He was buried in Devonshire St Cemetery.
