  • Notes
    • When he was 14, William was arrested and tried in 1839 for stealing a cheese, value 6d, the goods of Charles Knight and another. In his defence, he asserted that a man in a ‘smock-frock’ had promised him 5d if he carried the cheese to Whitechapel. William received a ‘good character’ and one of the witnesses promised to employ him. He was recommended to mercy and confined for seven days. [1]
