From The Beverley Recorder and General Advertiser Saturday, September 12, 1908. Percy’s arrest.

  • Notes
    • Went to Australia in 1897. In 1908, he was working as a salesman for Moran & Cato’s of Chapel St, Melbourne, where he reported the theft of his overcoat. He must have returned to England shortly afterwards as he was initiated into the Freemasons in Devon, 1899. Percy then returned to Australia where he married Ada Mann in 1900.
Ada petitioned for divorce on the grounds of cruelty in 1902 in the British High Court after two years of marriage - her submission makes shocking reading and was strongly denied by Percy. She alleged that Percy was often drunk and habitually beat her, on one occasion holding a gun to her head and threatening to shoot her. It seems that this petition wasn’t granted as Percy and Ada were living at the same address in New South Wales in 1913.

In 1905, a bankruptcy notice was issued against him by James Clarke solicitor. In 1908, Percy was arrested for being drunk and disorderly in Hull - he spat at and kicked the arresting officer - so there may have been at least some truth in Ada’s allegations. [4, 8, 10, 13, 14]
